Greig: We’re using break to recharge

- Mark Pirie

Gartcairn boss Davie Greig believes it will be good for his players to catch their breath as the junior sides go into hibernation.

Cairn’s clash with Dunipace was among a number of fixtures called off at the weekend and the Airdrie outfit will not play again until January.

However, after back-to-back league defeats Greig believes it could hand the players a good opportunity to recharge their batteries: “It’s not exactly the first half of the season,”he said,“but it gives you a chance to look back on the games and see what you can do better or what you did well.

“Overall I’m happy with how the season has gone so far.

“We’re second in the table and before the last couple of weeks had been top.

“If you take the games against Royal Albert and Carluke out of the equation then it would have been an excellent season so far but we are where we are.

“It’s a long season and this gives everyone a chance to catch their breath.

“We have won a lot more games than we have lost and we are in the next round of the Junior Cup and West of Scotland Cup. We have to be happy.”

Greig has almost reached a year in charge at MTC, having taken over from Gerry Bonham in January.

He is positive about his tenure, with the club sitting three points off top spot in the table having played a game less than leaders St Anthony’s.

Despite this, the boss admits he is frustrated at being unable to get Cairn out of Central Division District Two at the first time of asking.

“The major, major high was the Junior Cup run,” he said.

“That’s not something that happens for a team at our level.

“To get to the quarter-finals and face a big hitter like Linlithgow Rose was amazing for us.

“The lows were coming so close to getting promoted and missing out in the last two games.

“It was a big ask for us to win six games on the bounce, with the way our postponed games worked out, but with the players we have had here I think we could have won it.

“This season we are back amongst that fight and we have to make it count after Christmas.

“We have a decent squad here and are looking up.”
