The shock revelation of the council’s plans to demolish all 17 of Monklands tower blocks over the next two decades led to an outpouring of views from readers on the Advertiser’s Facebook page.

Some were in favour of the proposals, including KW Dunnett who said: “Building energy efficient and safe homes is a great idea, from family homes to one level sheltered housing for our aging population and everything in between.”

Gordon Syme added: “Not before time.”

A feeling backed by Gayle Isabella Cargill:“About time.”

Marain Downes simply responded: “Fantastic.”

Matt Williams also approved – but with a suggestion for the council: “It’s good they’re moving forward, but these flats can be used as emergency accommodation in the future.”

Anne Hill agreed: “Great idea. Build new council homes yes, but use the old flats to take people out of emergency accommodation and off waiting lists.”

But others hit out at the plans, with Danny McAulay claiming: “It’s going to lead to more homeless people across North Lanarkshire; terrible idea.”

Shaun McGuigan added: “I think it’s a total waste of money. North Lanarkshire Council has stated it can’t afford to put on public transport to get young children to school, but the local authority can find money to demolish high rise flats and build new properties?”

Ishbel Fyfe said: “Where’s the money coming from? And more green belt disappearing.”

Naomi McKee commented: “They can’t house the homeless due to a lack of housing stock. Don’t see how reducing it further is going to help.”

Ken Warr asked: “Are they going to build new homes before demolishing these homes?”

Meanwhile, Caroline KS posted: “The plans have a 20 year time scale.

“I would guess they are having trouble letting these properties, hence they are trying to build more desirable homes in the long-term.”
