Operatic Society in hunt for wedding singers

- Ian Bunting

Airdrie and Coatbridge Amateur Operatic Society are set to make more beautiful music together in 2018 as they walk down the aisle for their latest all-singing, all-dancing showcase.

Following on from this year’s smash hit Rock of Ages, members will be pulling on their most colourful leg warmers and honing their finest facial hair for their next big extravaganza.

The group will be storming the stage at Airdrie’s Sir John Wilson town hall in March with their take on eighties-set worldwide smash hit The Wedding Singer – and are looking for new members to join the musical show.

Based on the 1998 comedy movie starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, The Wedding Singer will take audiences back to a time when “hair was big, greed was good, collars were up and a wedding singer might just be the coolest guy in the room”.

A spokesperson for the society told the Advertiser:“Our show will focus on the story of rock star wannabe Robbie Hart – New Jersey’s favourite wedding singer until his own fiancée leaves him at the altar. Heartbroken and humiliated, Robbie proceeds to make every wedding as disastrous as his own and at one fateful wedding he meets Julia, a winsome waitress who turns his head and heart.

“As luck would have it, Julia is about to be married to a womanising, money-hungry Wall Street shark, and, unless Robbie can pull off the performance of a decade, the girl of his dreams will be gone forever.”

And the society are giving Monklands music fans the chance to channel their inner-songbirds by joining the production.

The spokesperson added:“We are looking for any male or female, young or old, singers, dancers and drama fans who would like to join the production to get in touch.

“The society are excited to get back to the decade of leg warmers, crimpers and Miami Vice, and we hope you will come along for the ride with us.”
