Workies hammer home valuable win

B-side put dent in The Post’s title hopes

- Mark Pirie

The Workmen’s B put a dent in The Post’s hopes of lifting the Airdrie and District Darts League title with a stunning victory in Calderbank.

The Workies had to win to keep pace with the top two and they put in an excellent display.

Andy Muirhead got the home side off to a perfect start with a 21-dart win and a 99 checkout, but Gerry Brown fought back with 18-dart and 21-dart wins to take the point for the ‘B’ Boys.

Jim Wood then won a hard-fought match to make it two before Stevie Carson hit 19-dart and 21-dart wins with a 180 to make it 3-0.

The Post needed to get a score on the board soon as the visitors threatened to run away with the match, but were put under even more pressure as Scott Gibb struck a 20-dart win made it four.

This inspired a great clash between Post chucker Kenny Campbell and Workmen hot shot Davy Cunningham.

The treble 20 took a battering, but Campbell will know that it was his failure to hit the double in two out of the three legs that cost him the point.

He did manage a 20-darter, however Cunningham enjoyed a 180 and a brace of 21-darters to make it 5-0 and put The Post in real trouble.

Robert O’Donahue though did give the title-chasing Post hope with 19dart and 21-dart efforts, and Martin Moulds then pulled back another point with 15-dart and 17-dart wins.

Cammy Reynolds halted the fight back with an 18-darter against an out of sorts Tommy Rodman.

John Hunter and Tommy Ferguson secured both points with victory in the first double.

Carsons moved to the top of the table with a battling win over The Eagle.

The Eagle lads were right up for the fight, but Carsons did grind it out on the last double to secure both points in the end.

Ernie Brown hit a 19-darter which was matched by Derek Cunningham. Graham Anderson threw a 21-darter while a resurgent Jim McGeary won in 17 darts.

The West End got a good win over the Boar’s Head with top performances from Shug Pearson and Billy Hendrie helping them to snatch a tight win while a 21 darter from Jim Walker ensued that the game was competitive.

Wilson Arms bad run continues as they were just outgunned by The Swan. Their main man Jim Parker kept up his good work by hitting 15-dart and 17-dart wins while Alex Gordon notched an 18-darter, but it wasn’t enough.

The Barnyard suffered a shock defeat to the Workmen’s A.

Michael O’Brien hit a 21-dart win in the surprise victory. RESULTS for January 29: Wilson Arms 5 The Swan 7, Boar’s Head 5 West End 7, The Clansman 9 Bank Social Club 3, The Post 4 Workmen’s B 8, The Eagle 5 Carson 7, Workmen’s A 8 The Barnyard 4.
