Carsons teams show their class Good show in three and four man

- Mark Pirie

The top teams in the Airdrie and District Darts League battled it out for a spot in the final of the three and four man team events.

In the three-man event Carsons A trio Cameron Menzies, Frank Quinn and Harry Edwards looked like they would be hard to beat.

However, the short format had been put in place to create a cup-style competition. There was only a triple pairs and single games to be played - which meant you could only afford to lose one-leg.

Carsons did get a few scares earlyon which left no room for error with The West End, The Post and the Boar’s Head all taking a leg, but their class showed in the end.

Menzies, had reached his first Challenge Tour final with the PDC the day before, was still in great form.

In the deciding match in the semifinal stage the Workmen’s A trio of Lee Barber, Alex McNeil and Chris Fawcett were outgunned but left the oche knowing they had put in a good performance.

Carsons opponents in the final will be The Clansman A who defeated their own B team in the semi-final.

Ian Randall, Alex McPheat and Wullie Smith played well throughout the night - in particular when they eliminated the favourites from The Workmen’s B.

In the four man once again Carsons will be represented in the final.

Former district champions Derek Cunningham, Graham Anderson, Ernie Brown were joined by in-form Jim McGeary as they blew their rivals away.

Even a decent Post outfit could not stop them, despite the best effort of the Calderbank four-man team.

It seemed hard to think of a nonprofessional quartet that could stop them, but The Swan will need to try as they reached the final thanks to wins over The Eagle and Wilson Arms.

Jim Parker, Davie Raeside, Alex Gordon and Lauchie Black are all good players but face a massive task on finals night.

● The Airdrie Supporters Trust along with the backing of Osprey Overseas have arranged for the first Airdrie Masters Darts Tournament to take place in the Spring.

Three qualifying heats will be held soon for other places in the field and other big names may be added to a star-studded field later.
