Workmen battle it out in derby clash B-side dispose of their A counterparts

- Mark Pirie

The Workmen’s B saw off their rivals on derby day as they kept up their bid for top spot in the Airdrie and District Darts League.

The ‘A’ team were hoping that they could continue their decent form from recent weeks and shock their ‘B’ rivals for the first time since 2005.

Charlie Morrisey though was their only reason to be cheerful when he defeated Scott Gibb.

Despite having other chances this was the only A chalk of the night.

It was a decisive win for The Workmen’s B that keeps them challenging for the title.

The game of the night was in Coatbridge where The Eagle played hosts to Chapelhall side The Swan.

In a match that swung one way and then another it was certainly good entertainment for any neutral.

Brian Carr was on the mark for them with a 21- dart win and teammate Davie Raeside complimented that by winning in the same amount.

But despite the visitors playing well they came away just a point from the game - thanks to some cracking arrows from The Eagle.

Bill Brown was again on the mark with a 19-dart win and Pat Havlin had a 121-checkout with a 21-dart win.

Gerry Kiernan showed that he can mix it with anybody when he is in form and rattled in a 110-escape.

The Post also kept up their good form as they saw off struggling Wilson Arms.

Wilsons could not emulate their win of last week, however Joe Stanfield did have a 180 to make sure they were at least competitive.

Martin Moulds was in fine form for the Calderbank boys with a 20dart win.

Carsons put in a professional display against the Bank Social Club.

Derek Cunningham hit a 17-dart win for the league leaders, but the fact they lost three games to one of the divisions strugglers will give cause for optimism for their rivals.

The West End Bar secured a fine victory away from home against The Barnyard.

Billy Hendrie hit a 120-checkout and Gerry Houston helped matters with a 180.

Tam McKnights 20-dart win and John Grants 180 were not enough for the hosts.

In the other match, the Boar’s Head gave it all they had at Caldercruix to tackle The Clansman.

Father and son Jim and Ross Walker did the Airdrie team proud, with the dad hitting a 180 and Ross winning in 19-darts and 21-darts.

Despite a decent night, in the end it wasn’t enough as Wullie Smith secured a win for The Clan with a brace of 180s. RESULTS for Monday, Feburary 19: The Clansman 8 Boar’s Head 4, The Post 9 Wilson Arms 3, The Eagle 6 The Swan 6, The Barnyard 4 West End 8, Carsons 9 Bank Social Club 3, Workmen’s A 1 Workmen’s B 11.
