The proud tradition of Tunnock’s

-

One of Lanarkshire’s most successful family businesses is Tunnock’s.

The firm – who have been operating in Uddingston for over 125 years – are best known for their famous Teacakes and Caramel Wafers.

Tunnock’s are a huge part of local history and the popularity of their products has given them customers from all over the world.

They are so popular, in fact, that in 2014, giant Teacakes made an appearance at the opening ceremony at the Commonwealth Games and also featured in an episode of Still Game.

Boyd Tunnock, whose grandfather Thomas opened the family’s first bakery in 1890 in Uddingston, said: “Tunnock’s may be renowned around the world, but we started in Lanarkshire and we are still proudly based in the county today.”

Did you know Archie Tunnock realised he had to make something that had a longer shelf life than a cake and developed the Caramel Wafer in 1952?

He bought a dozen dry wafers and learned how to make caramel and chocolate.

The result was the now famous Caramel Wafer.

That was followed by the Snowball, the Caramel Log and the Teacake.

It’s hard to think of Hamilton and not think of the famous sweet export. And when the new Hamilton Advertister office opened its doors it had to be a Tunnock’s cake for staff and readers to tuck into.
