Mixed reaction to speed bump installation plans

As part of a traffic-calming scheme, speed bumps are to be installed on Whinhall Road and Burnfoot Road in Airdrie.

The plans, which will see eight sets of three cushions, covering the road width, being put in place, were approved by North Lanarkshire’s infrastructure committee, despite an objection from bus operators Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT).

Advertiser reader Scott Reid questioned the proposals: “Better off spending the money on filling pot holes.

“Vans, motorbikes or larger vehicles can still speed, especially near schools; people are not looking around them and watching for bumps.”

Seamus O’Neill pondered: “Chicanes would do the same job and not wreck my car. No more expensive than speed bumps. Can’t we have these instead?”

Angela McLean commented: “Don’t think the bus flow could get any worse anyway.”

Arlene Proctor approved of the plans: “I live here and the speed some of the cars that go up this street is ridiculous considering there is a school here. I, for one, welcome them [speed bumps].”

Marina McInally also backed the introduction of speed bumps: “There’s only one bus that goes through this road every day, so I don’t see what the big deal is,.

“It’s the best thing they can do, especially when there’s a school on this route.”

Last week’s Advertiser front page story revealed the horror honeymoon experienced by Shawhead newlyweds George and Pauline McMahon, who had to flee the idyllic Pond Cottage during the early hours of their wedding night after being plagued by incessant scratching from rats.

What made matters worse for the couple was the cottage’s owner’s claims the scenario had been “set up” and him telling George and Pauline to never return, despite being presented with photographic and video evidence of the rodents’ presence.

Siobhan Traynor welcomed the news George and Pauline were given their money back:“Glad you got refunded Pauline.”

Michelle Dunnery warned: “Don’t pick this one for wedding accommodation.”

Elaine McLaughlan simply added: “Shocking.”
