Drive to give back to staff of the NHS

Cameron and his team ferry staff to work in 4x4’s

A North Lanarkshire hero has revealed he took NHS staff to and from their places of work to “give back to something we all rely on”.

Cameron Dalziel, 54, and his team of volunteers delivered workers to hospitals in their trusty 4x4 vehicles.

At least 20 staff members were taken to hospitals across the area, with many being dropped at University Hospital Monklands.

Kind- hearted Cameron reached out to NHS staff on Facebook last Wednesday night as the conditions worsened.

His post received more than 750 shares, with Monklands management getting in touch personally to enquire about his help.

Cameron, who owns C&C Transport, told the Advertiser: “I really respect our emergency services and wanted to give back to them.

“We all rely on the NHS, and its staff work so hard to care for us.

“We had doctors, nurses and consultants in the cars; they were over the moon with what we were able to do for them.

“They needed some help and I was glad to be able to offer that.”

Meanwhile, MSPs Fulton MacGregor and Alex Neil visited University Hospital Monklands on Monday to thank staff for their efforts when the country ground to a halt.

Scores of workers, including doctors, nurses and catering staff, stayed in the hospital for days to ensure continuity of care for the sick and unwell.

Mr Neil said: “I wanted to pay tribute to the hard-working staff of the NHS who, as always, went the extra mile to ensure people were cared for.

“While most of us heeded the warnings to avoid travel, they sacrificed.”

Mr MacGregor added: “The whole country is grateful not only to the staff in the hospitals, but to the paramedics, police and fire services, as well as the care workers and council staff who continued to work throughout the inclement weather.”

North Lanarkshire Council leader Jim Logue was also keen to praise his staff and thanked community members for their fighting spirit.

He said: “It’s essential that when we have the sustained snowfall we saw last week that we keep primary roads clear before we are able to tackle residential roads.

“With this volume of snow, that takes a long time.

“And because we had severe drifting of snow we kept having to go back to treat some main roads.

“That’s why it was great to see the kind of community spirit we’ve experienced, with people working together to clear their streets and also helping to make sure we were able to open schools after the weekend.”
