Charities bag funding boost

Helping hand appreciated

- Jean Ward

Monklands charities received a bumper boost to their funds thanks to the efforts of those at Morrisons in Airdrie.

Kind- hearted staff and customers raised money over the festive period, and displayed their community spirit by presenting cheques to representatives of their chosen local charities at a coffee morning in the store.

The orga n i s at i o n s benefiting from a share of the four- figure windfall were St Andrew’s Hospice, Monklands Women’s Aid, Wester Moffat Hospital, the @Home Centre, the Harry Walker Centre and Forth Valley Riding School, as well as Morrisons’ national charity, Clic Sargent.

Cus t o m e r service assistant Ann Seagriff told the Advertiser: “We’re trying to get involved with as many local charities as we possibly can.

“We collected £ 4000 through our Christmas toy appeal and this is our chance to hand it out to the community.

“It’s been an eye-opener for us; we didn’t realise how many underprivileged kids there were on our doorstep.”

Wester Moffat staff nurse Sharon Fagan said: “We really appreciate all that Morrisons have done for us as we are such a small hospital.”

Rosaleen McKenna, a fundraiser at St Andrew’s Hospice, agreed: “I’m delighted; the staff here are so generous to the hospice on an ongoing basis.”

Sasha Bennett, senior business administrator at Monklands Women’s Aid, enthused: “The support we have received over the past few years has been phenomenal.

“These funds will go towards providing essential basic items for the women and children that we serve.”

And Lorraine Hepburn, carriage driver from Riding for the Disabled Forth Group, added: “I can’t believe it; it’s absolutely amazing. Morrisons have done fantastic work.”
