Romance to grab you

-

Call Me by Your Name (15) ●●●● ●

Rarely will an onscreen romance grab as much as the bond between Timothée Chalamet’s teen and Armie Hammer’s research assistant here.

So much of the beauty in Luca Guadagnino’s film lies with his cast’s ability to say so much with their body language; and it all builds to a touching, suitably mature ending.

Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 9 (15) ●●●● ● From Fatwas and pickles to accidental texts, this superlative sitcom continues to deliver hilarity in spades.

Larry David is, as ever, a cringe-worthy joy and among the guest stars gleefully sending themselves up is Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda. There’s barely a bum note, with welcome returns for old favourites. Murder on the Orient Express (12) ●●● ●●

Kenneth Branagh steers the famous train on its second movie adaptation; directing and growing a hefty moustache to play iconic detective Hercule Poirot.

One may wonder what the point is in rehashing this familiar mystery, but within the first few moments it’s easy to see why.

Advances in filmmaking and a $55 million budget allow Branagh to frame Agatha Christie’s classic using 65mm cameras. Branagh is every bit as impressive in front of the camera; the detective’s attention to detail and humorous jabs are a joy to behold.

You’ll rarely find as expansive a big-name cast as this outside of an Avengers movie and some stars get lost in the shuffle.
