Councillors mark 100th anniversary of votes for women

-

Female councillors from across North Lanarkshire came together to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the women’s vote last week.

Among the group was provost Jean Jones, who said: “While the Act 100 years ago marked the beginning of a groundbreaking process to give women the right to vote, it has taken years of political reform and change in society to achieve some level of equality, not just in politics but across a whole range of issues.

“What those women did do all those years ago was give women a voice, and they used it to pave the way for better women’s rights in politics, in the workplace, legally and within our culture.

“We have seen a lot of changes that have improved the circumstances for women and here in North Lanarkshire, that is evidenced by having over a quarter of our council comprising of women.”
