A grand effort LGBTYouth Scotland benefit

-

The power of togetherness shone through at Airdrie Academy’s “Purple Friday” event.

Pupils and staff at the secondary school joined forces to show their support for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) youngsters across the globe.

Uniforms were left in cupboards for the day as the students were encouraged to wear casual clothing, often emblazoned with purple colouring.

Proceeds from the sale of “donuts, badges, lanyards and ribbons” saw £917 raised, with every penny being donated to LGBT Youth Scotland, who play a leading role in the “provision of quality youth work to LGBTI youngsters that promotes their health and wellbeing”.

Pupils also signed a rainbow-coloured flag that will now have a permanent home in the school.

An Airdrie Academy spokesperson said: “The flag will be proudly displayed in the social area as a reminder that we all stand together for equality and inclusion.

“We were delighted to make a near£1000 donation to LGBT Youth Scotland as we really admire the work the organisation is carrying out.”
