Bookbug sessions

Plains Evangelica­l Church hosts Bookbug sessions for pre-school children on Tuesdays at 10.30am. Activities include songs and stories and the sessions will run during term time; contact Sheena on 07525 031515 for more informatio­n.

1st Clyde Scouts’ weekly meetings take place on Wednesdays at the St David’s and Plains primary schools’ campus. Beavers for six to eight-year-olds meet from 6.15pm to 7.15pm and Cubs for ages eight to 10 from 7.30pm to 8.30pm. The cost for both meetings is £2.50 and youngsters are asked to take along soft shoes and a drink. Beavers’ Space Badge, fishing and swimming are among the group’s activities. The village would like to pay tribute to George Imire, who was the organist at Greengairs Parish Church for seven years. George travelled from Hamilton every Sunday and never missed a service, last playing on February 18. George sadly took ill shortly afterwards and it is with “deep sadness” that the congregati­on was informed of the passing of its “faithful friend” on March 8.

Villager tribute Bingo night

The mothers’ and toddlers’ group’s next bingo night will be held on Monday, March 26, to raise funds for the community council. All are welcome to attend in the community hall. Tickets are on sale from 7pm, with eyes down at 7.30pm, and tea and cakes will be available.

The children’s committee will hold a teddy bears’ picnic and bear hunt on Sunday, March 25, from 2pm to 4pm. All kids in the village are invited, and asked to bring along their teddy bears. A raffle will also take place on the day and any donations will be greatly appreciate­d. Applicatio­n forms are now available from the social club bar staff and committee members, and must be returned on, or before, this Sunday.

Teddy bears’ picnic Back Brae Gospel Hall

The Sunday school runs from 2.30pm to 3.15pm, with the breaking of the bread also taking place on Sunday, at 11am. The evening gospel meeting is held at 6.30pm every Sunday, except the last Sunday of the month when the service runs from 3.30pm to 4.30pm. A prayer and Bible reading is held every Wednesday from 7.30pm to 9pm.

Councillor­s’ surgeries

Councillor Sophia Coyle will hold her next surgeries tonight and on Wednesday, March 28, from 6pm to 6.30pm, with Councillor Tommy Morgan’s surgery running on Saturday, March 24, at noon and Councillor David Cullen’s latest consultati­on taking place on Tuesday, March 20, from 7pm to 7.30pm. All three councillor­s’ surgeries are held in the village’s community hall.

Miners’ memorial

The Stanrigg Miners’ Memorial is open to all who wish to visit. July 9 this year will mark 100 years since 19 miners lost their lives in the disaster and the retired miners’ committee is arranging a remembranc­e service on Sunday, July 8; anyone interested in helping to commemorat­e the anniversar­y can call 01236 830637. Transport to the memorial can also be arranged by calling the same number above.
