Charity in lotto funding

Massive support

Pupils from Plains Primary are preparing for a memorable trip – as they head to the Titanic museum.

Youngsters from Primaries Four to Seven have been studying the iconic ship and its tragic maiden voyage, by making models and artwork, writing compositions and studying historical documents and newspapers.

Now they are getting set to visit the Titanic visitor centre in Belfast in May after fundraisers including a quiz night and movie afternoon gathered more than £2000 for the adventure.

The school has also been supported by local businesses; with Alan Murray of Saltire presenting acting head teacher Ruth McCarthy with a cheque for £500.

It was handed over at a showcase of work, also attended by Neil Gray MP and Airdrie North councillors Alan Beveridge, Sophia Coyle, David Cullen and Tommy Morgan.

Miss McCarthy said:“The hard work of pupils and staff, and contribution of families, businesses and organisations, has been wonderful.

“The positive feedback on the children’s achievements made it a truly memorable experience, and we’re now excited to take the next step in the journey.”

The Moira Anderson Foundat i o n h a s received a lottery jackpot of more than £ 86,000 to support its work with people affected by childhood sexual abuse.

It will be used to fund its Pathways to Progress project, which aims to improve selfconfidence and self-esteem, reduce health problems associated with abuse and build resilience.

The two-year award from the Big Lottery Fund comes after the Airdrie organisation saw a huge increase in referrals during the course of last year, with numbers rising by 24 per cent.

Foundation director Gillian Urquhart said: “This had a direct impact on staff and we struggled to meet demand.

“This award will assist us in providing a vital service to people affected by childhood sexual abuse when they are most in need, and without unnecessary delays.

“We’re delighted and hugely grateful to the National Lottery for making this award.”

Big Lottery Scotland chair Maureen McGinn added: “The funding will make a big difference where it is needed most, and I wish the Moira Anderson Foundation every success as it goes on to develop and expand its project for the benefit of the local community.”

The Foundation, which is based at Mavisbank Street, offers counselling, therapy, support and a pop- in group; and supports family members as well as those directly affected by abuse.
