Michael’s on career ladder
Modern apprenticeship
A Baillieston teenager is highlighting the benefit of apprenticeships – as he embarks upon an exciting training programme in software and web development.
Michael McGrattan has secured a post with the Student Loans Company (SLC) and will now spend a year working towards a diploma in ICT and telecommunication.
During that time, he will learn programming languages and technologies through classroom training and on-the-job experience.
The 18-year-old is among nine modern apprentices at the company; who could also have the opportunity to progress to a Scottish level eight qualification, which is the equivalent to the second year of a degree programme.
A delighted Michael said during the recent Scottish apprenticeship week: “This represents a great start to my career in software development.
“Every day I’m getting the chance to learn from experienced professionals who have all been friendly, helpful and very willing to share their knowledge with me.”
SLC chief information officer Adrian Tucker said: “It’s great to have Michael on board – he has the right attitude and is already injecting lots of fresh ideas and enthusiasm.
“It ’ s also a good opportunity for us to foster new talent and ensure we’re developing people with the skills we need for the future.”
Meanwhile, Neil Gray MP has welcomed new figures showing an increase in those in employment training during the third quarter of 2017.
The Skills Development Scotland (SDS) statistics show 529 more people on modern apprenticeships than in the same period of the previous year.
The figures also highlight that more women, disabled people and those from black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds are enrolling onto courses.
Airdrie representative Mr Gray said: “I’m sure there are more people who would like to take on apprenticeships and perhaps don’t know how to access one.
“With the range of courses available, there’s something for everyone, and I know that SDS is working hard to increase enrolment figures.”
