Success of work scheme

New post for Gary

- Judith Tonner

A Coatbridge man is driving forward at work after finding a job via North Lanarkshire’s supported enterprise.

Gary Whitehouse is now an environmental operative at Terex Trucks – and says the role “saved my life in so many ways”.

The 37- year- old had previously suffered a brain injury, and said: “The job gave me a purpose to my days and made me feel valued.

“I never thought I’d feel this way again after my brain injury. The job is so perfect for me and the staff are amazing.

“My mum and I can’t thank the service enough for all they have done; she is so proud of me and doesn’t worry about my future now.”

Gary was recruited after managing operations director Paul Hudson attended an open day highlighting the supported employment service, which helps people with disabilities and those facing challenging barriers into work.

His Terex mentor, Karen Anne Duffy, added: “He’s settled in well, and has quickly picked up the assigned tasks; Gary has a very positive attitude and strong work ethic, and we’re now starting to expand the role to add in new duties and responsibilities.”

Supported employment co- ordinator Gail McKee said: “We pride ourselves in matching the right person to the right job, and Gary is progressing and had his contract extended.

“We’re delighted to be involved with such a respected local employer; we work with over 100 businesses and would encourage others to find out more.” For details, call 01698 274500.
