Airdrie & Coatbridge Advertiser
Consider the majority
Dear Editor, In last week’s edition there was a story which stated 3000 people had signed a petition against the proposed Europark development on land situated between Calderbank and Carnbroe.
Elsewhere on the page, the campaigner quoted in the story, Dr Glen, said that, “more than 30,000 people” live in the area.
By my calculations that means just 10 per cent of residents oppose the plans strongly enough to put their name to the petition.
Even allowing for a generous 25 per cent of that number being children, it still appears that the majority of people are either in favour of the proposals or don’t particularly care either way.
I think it’s about time the Advertiser stopped pandering to the minority, albeit a vocal one, and instead chose to reflect the views of the silent majority.
I’d offer the same advice to the politicians who participated in that rather absurd parliamentary debate on the subject , which, given no plans have actually been passed, amounted to no more than speculating on a hypothesis.
Despite their grandstanding, I’d wager these individuals have far greater interest in self preservation than that of the so-called green belt.
They should remember that minority backing seldom retains seats. Name and address supplied.
