Learning to be safe online

-

Glenmavis schoolchildren were treated to an arresting presentation about internet safety.

New Monkland Primary and Nursery teamed up with Police Scotland’s Cyber Harm Prevention Unit to deliver an “informative and thought-provoking workshop” involving pupils and parents.

Kids at the nursery and P1-4 youngsters received input from officers including Davy Cumming of the Safer Communities’ Specialist Crime Division throughout the school day, with campaign mascot Nogo the Monkey there to lend a hand.

Parents and P5-7 pupils were later invited to an evening workshop with the police, supported by New Monkland’s parent council, which included a powerful presentation on internet usage.

Inspector Coleen Wylie, of Police Scotland’s Safer Communities department, said: “We’re delighted to be supporting local schools raising awareness around online safety, and it’s really encouraging to see how well the children, parents, carers and teaching staff at New Monkland Primary and Nursery engaged with our sessions.

“The internet is a great place for children and young people to learn, create and connect with each other; however, it’s important that, along with our partners, we continue to support young people and equip them with the skills and confidence to keep safe online.”
