Diamond couple mark special anniversary
Sixty years together
An Airdrie couple have marked 60 years of wedded bliss with a sparkling celebration.
Diamond pair William and Jean Craig were joined by their devoted family and friends at their Glenmavis home.
The couple, former members of Airdrie Bowling Club, were bowled over when son Derek, daughter Heather, their five grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren and friends came along to celebrate their big day.
The childhood sweethearts tied the knot at Airdrie Baptist Church on March 21, 1958, in a ceremony conducted by Reverend Hope Scott.
And that week crooner Perry Como was topping the UK charts with his hit song Magic Moments.
Jean, now 81, first caught the Greengairs apprentice joiner’s eye and stole his heart as a schoolgirl on her way to Airdrie High.
William, 83, who began his career with J& R Aitken on Forsyth Street, was employed in the construction sector until he retired.
He was also a former past president of his beloved Airdrie Bowling Club.
Jean worked as a cashier at the Co-op’s Airdrie and Coatbridge branches before having her son, Derek, and two daughters Janice – who sadly passed away five years ago – and Heather.
She is an avid reader and enjoys sitting down with a good crime thriller, with James Patterson being her favourite author.
“Mum and dad celebrated with all our family and their many friends at home and they really enjoyed their day and had a great time,” Derek told the Advertiser.
And to mark their special day, they were both delighted to be presented with a card from the Queen and a beautiful bouquet of flowers from North Lanarkshire Provost Jean Jones and Lady Susan Haughey, the Lord Lieutenant of Lanarkshire.
