The Disaster Artist (15) ●●●● ●
This behind-the-curtain look at one of the worst films ever made, 2003’s The Room, is fascinating viewing.
James Franco directs and gives a spot-on take of the movie’s real-life leading man Tommy Wiseau.
You’ll cringe, laugh and feel heart sorry for Wiseau as he dreams of Hollywood glory, despite his obvious limitations.
Franco’s brother Dave also shines as Wiseau’s buddy, and The Room co-star, Greg Sestero. Far from a full-on burial, though, the Franco brothers treat their subject matter with respect and refuse to ham it up.
It’s an insightful, entertaining tribute but, ironically, won’t encourage the repeat viewings of its woeful inspiration.
