Diamond couple celebrate
Jean and Jim recall 60 years of happy marriage
A former RAF mechanic is still on cloud nine as he marks 60 years of magical marriage to the love of his life.
Coatbridge couple Jim and Jean Scott celebrated their diamond wedding with a trip to the seaside in Torquay.
Former hairdresser Jean, 80, was a cut above in Jim’s eyes when the lovebirds first met on the dancefloor at Coatbridge Palais.
The pair got married at Whifflet Parish Church on April 18, 1958, before a reception at the local Masonic hall.
And Jean immediately showed her dedication to her new husband by jetting overseas with him.
She explained: “Jim was an airframe mechanic with the RAF for five years and just after we got married, we both moved out to Malta for a year.
“This was so Jim could carry out his work and we had a wonderful time over there.”
Jean worked in her aunt Nessie’s hair salon after leaving school until her departure to Malta and as well as his time in the RAF, Jim, 81, was employed by his uncle George Bonner’s ironmongers, who had shops in Airdrie, Coatbridge and Glasgow.
Fittingly, given where the couple first met, both Jim and Jean still love to head for a spin on the dancefloor.
Jean said: “We’ve always been keen dancers and still enjoy it to this day.
“I also love walking and Jim is a big fan of bowls. We both like to keep ourselves fit and active.”
Although they never had any children, Jean and Jim, who live in Quarry Street, were still showered with well-deserved gifts from family and friends as they commemorated their diamond milestone.
Jean said: “We got a lot of lovely presents, with people giving us cards and flowers.
“The two of us went on a wee holiday to Torquay to celebrate our anniversary and we had a wonderful time.
“On the day itself we went out for a meal and shared some great memories of our time together.
“Jim and I are really chuffed to reach 60 years of marriage as not everyone stays together this long; and we still love each other as much as ever.”
