Labour leader holds talks in Gibraltar
Richard Leonard met with important local dignitaries during a recent visit to Gibraltar.
The Scottish Labour leader and Advertiser columnist took time out from a few days’break in Spain to meet with Fabian Picardo QC, the Chief Minister of Gibraltar, and executive members of the Gibraltar Socialist Labour Party (GSLP).
During his audience with the Chief Minister, Mr Leonard discussed the relationship with Spain and the impact Brexit will have on Gibraltarians.
Following the meeting, he enjoyed an informal discussion with Joe Bossano, founder of the GSLP, and members of the party executive.
The GSLP is the oldest surviving political party in Gibraltar and has seven of the 17 members in the Parliament of Gibraltar.
Mr Leonard said:“It was very interesting to hear Mr Picardo’s views on the likely affect Brexit will have on Gibraltar and what he sees as the main challenges ahead.
“Following our meeting, I was very proud to meet with Mr Bossano, who is a giant in trade union and Labour circles, and with members of the party executive.
“We had wide-ranging discussions covering recent political events, our common roots in the trade union movement and how, as socialists, we must use any powers to advance the cause of working people and build an equal society.”
See next week’s Advertiser for an exclusive interview where Mr Leonard will discuss his experiences during his first six months as Scottish Labour leader.
