Hugh’s lacing up his boots for new fundraising trek

Dementia and Alzheimer charities will benefit from long distance hike

An Airdrie man is again pulling on his walking boots for a long- distance charity challenge.

Hugh Samson will next month tackle the 120-mile Cleveland Way, starting at the market town of Hemsley and covering the North Yorkshire moors before following a coastal path to the finishing line at Filey.

The 69-year-old aims to raise more than £2000 for his chosen dementia and Alzheimer charities – after his success in collecting a similar sum for the Beatson cancer charity back in 2016.

He told the Advertiser: “I like long-distance walking and I’ve been climbing a few munros. I look to do a long trek every couple of years and I’m hoping to do the Great Glen Way next year.

“This will be different to my previous Pennine Way challenge as it’s a mixture of moors and rougher terrain with a coastal path. My wife, Audrey, put a pin in the map and that’s how we chose the Cleveland Way!

“I’m hoping to complete it in around eight days, covering up to 20 miles per day, I and hope to make as much as I previously did for the Beatson.”

Monkland Estate resident Hugh raised funds for that charity two years ago, in honour of his late brother-inlaw, by tackling the 267-mile Pennine Way challenge.

He added of this year ’ s beneficiaries: “I chose these charities Charity walker Hugh Samson as I’ve been reading a lot about dementia and Alzheimer’s recently and know a few people whose families have been affected, so wanted to do something to help with research.”
