Thief lands more jail time

-

An Airdrie thief who was due to be released from prison in July will spend an extra eight months behind bars.

Barry Williamson, 38, was given the sentence after admitting two charges of theft which occurred in June and September last year.

He returned to court last week after his sentence was deferred to allow for reports to be gathered.

Williamson, of Cairnhill Road, stole a men’s shaver from Boots and meat from Carlisle Road’s BP petrol station.

He was given five months for pocketing the shaver and three months for stealing the food.

His solicitor Mark Lutton said: “He is currently serving a sentence and is due to be released on July 24.

“He has three kids with whom he is in contact.

“His time in jail has helped his drinking and he says he hasn’t drank in six months.”

Sheriff Frank Pieri queried the cost of the items involved in the theft and the procurator fiscal replied: “The quantity of meat was valued at £10 and the shaver was valued at £179. “There was no recovery of either.” Sheriff Frank Pieri told Williamson: “Your solicitor has said everything he can for you.

“The report doesn’t do you much good.

“On the two deferred sentences I can only deal with this by way of a custodial sentence.

“You’ll be sentenced to five months on charge one and three months on charge two.

“This totals an eight- month sentence, which will run consecutively to your current sentence.”
