WORKING FOR YOU Government shows true colours
This month Theresa May and her cabinet signed off on military intervention in Syria – without parliamentary approval.
I was proud to stand with Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the Labour party, calling for Theresa May to come before Parliament and put the proposal to a vote.
By failing to allow rightful democratic debate, Theresa May and her government have shown their true colours.
It’s my view that, as a country, we shouldn’t be showing the world what kind of nation we are by flexing our muscles with military force, but should instead lead the way by caring for our own by funding the NHS, ensuring that our elderly have dignity in retirement and that the most vulnerable are protected in their hour of need.
These are the ways we show the international community what kind of a nation we are.
In other news, with the Cabinet of Chaos we have seen the Home Secretary resign over the Windrush fiasco, where up to 57,000 people could face deportation.
I hope we have seen the Home Office’s mentality of “deport first and ask questions later” end with Amber Rudd’s term in office, however I think that Sajid Javid will have his work cut out for him.
One case which I have been challenging the Home Office over is that of Kirkwood family the Merrys.
Olya Merry was advised to leave the UK by the Home Office and I wrote to the immigration minister to ask for a full ministerial review of her case.
After that review was conducted, it was found the letter was sent in error.
Can you imagine if you were sent a letter to take you away from your family, your children, your neighbours, your home?
Imagine how many people would run for cover if they received a similar letter. How many more were sent in error?
Locally, I would like to commend Councillor Alex McVey who, on April 19 during a North Lanarkshire Council planning meeting, put forward an official refusal to the latest plans for the incinerator in Carnbroe.
This is a fantastic show of people power after the residents of Coatbridge spoke out clearly against this development.
It is great to see local councillors acting on their behalf.
We should lead the way by caring for our own
