Tree protection order is made permanent
Woodland secured
A tempora r y Tre e Preservation Order ( TPO) issued by North Lanarkshire Council to protect woodland on the site of a proposed Monklands housing development has been made permanent.
The initial TPO for the land between Calderbank and Carnbroe was issued last December. And with no objections having been raised since, the local authority has now made the order permanent.
It means that no trees within the two areas covered by the TPO can be felled or removed by any potential construction work if planning approval is secured by developer Orchard Brae.
The Europark proposal, which will be considered by the council in the coming weeks, includes plans for around 2600 homes, leisure facilities and a hotel.
Central Scotland list MSP Graham Simpson has opposed the proposed development since its inception.
The Conservative representative said: “The news that the TPO is now permanent is a real boost. We need to stop thinking that the greenbelt is just another piece of land to build on.
“Hopefully now the people of Calderbank and Carnbroe can enjoy their own small piece of stunning woodland in the knowledge that it will be there for many years to come.”
A spokesperson for Europark also welcomed the news, adding: “It continues to be our intention to retain this woodland area as it forms an integral part of the green heart of Europark, which will form more than 50 per cent of the development.
“This area falls into the proposed country park at the core of the plans, so we hope these trees would be a treasured part of the site for generations to come.”
