W/D kids win Dalziel youth festival

- Rugby

Waysiders/Drumpellier mini-section won the Festival of Youth Rugby at Dalziel Rugby Club.

W/D under-14s faced the hosts Dalziel in the first match of the day.

It was a hard-fought match, with only a superb conversion separating the teams with the Monklands team winning 7-5.

Biggar were the next match on the card for W/D, and two weeks previously W/D had visited Biggar and won convincingly in a tough match.

It wasn’t to be the case this time around. With both teams battling hard the match ended in a five-all draw.

It could have gone either way but both teams played and defended well and a slip up in the last minute of the game allowed Biggar to score and end the match as a draw.

The final game of the day for W/D was against Cumnock.

The Langloan outfit had to win by two clear tries to win the tournament and captain Keanu Trego rallied the boys at the start of the match.

W/D scored in the opening minutes, before they broke through a good Cumnock defensive unit from the backs which allowed W/D over the line with Peter scoring two conversions to seal the match 14-0 and win the tournament.

Coaches Mick Hagerty and Craig Hughes were delighted with the performance and workrate from the boys.

For anyone interested in joining, W/D youth training takes place at the club on Tuesdays, 7pm to 8.30pm, and Saturday mornings from 10am till 11.30am.

They also run a Thursday session for gym work.
