Cuts in budget led to me quitting – Kerr

-

Brian Kerr admits fears over huge slashes to the budget led to him calling time on his Albion Rovers career.

The ex-Scotland cap and his assistant Stuart Malcolm turned down contract offers last week, having been locked in talks with the League Two new boys since their relegation from the third-tier on the last day of the season.

The former Hibs and Motherwell midfielder admits that budget cuts following the drop led to him deciding to knock back the revised management offer on the table with the side needing a total rebuild next term – with every player out of contract this summer.

Kerr admitted that his tenure didn’t work due to a number of factors, including cost-cutting measures, and that he had concerns they would be a smaller budget for the League Two campaign.

He said:“I want to thank the club for giving me the opportunity.

“I have enough experience in the game to see that this one didn’t work out for a number of reasons. For myself, I’ve got to look and see what would be the right opportunity going forward.

“I’ve been honest all season about the problems we have faced.

“We made the decision to bring in some quality players with the budget we had but when the injuries and suspensions started adding up we ended up paying for it.

“We were talking to the club about the budget for next season and it looks like it’s going to look very different from this season, at this stage at least.

“I wanted to write the wrongs of last season but we had to take everything into account.”

He continued:“I know Albion Rovers. I know the budget, I know the facilities, and I know the pitch – everything that goes on behind the scenes.

“I had to decide if I thought I was the right person to take the club forward at this point and if the club were right for me. I decided no – that I would give someone else the chance to do it.

“It’s a good club and these things aren’t to say that someone else won’t come in and do a good job.

“If they do fair play to them. They might be able to work in a different market and have different ideas from what we had.

“Myself and Stuart just decided that we have to get our next decision spot on.”
