Step up for Beatson

Members of Airdrie’s Contact the Elderly group were among 90 guests from across Scotland who enjoyed a tea party in the Trossachs.

The local residents attend monthly tea parties hosted by volunteers.

Pupils from Glenboig Primary teamed up with wrestler Grado to launch this year’s charity walk in support of the Beatson Cancer Charity.

The Off the Beatson Track event takes place on Sunday, August 26.

A team from the Coatbridge school will be taking part and fellow Monklands residents are being urged to get involved companions from 13 other groups for the organisati­on’s annual event at Kinlochard, near Aberfoyle, where they were treated to afternoon tea, dancing and music from accordioni­st Raymond Chalmers, piper Murray O’May and harpist as the charity aims to break last year’s record of 2100 walkers.

The 10km route starts and finishes at the Riverside Museum in Glasgow.

Calum McNair of Beatson said: “It’s overwhelmi­ng to see how many people have taken part in this event over the past four years and we’re extremely grateful for the support.”

Grado said: “I’ve known the Beatson since I was young because my mum was treated there. Beatson Cancer Charity provides vital services to patients and Katherine Harrison.

Joining the guests at the waterside venue, overlookin­g Loch Ard, were 50 volunteer drivers and hosts who help to run the monthly social events.

Support officer Caroline McGinlay families going through a very difficult time and I want to support that.

“Everyone should sign up to do Off the Beatson Track. It’s a great family day out for all ages, and you can take your dog plus it’s raising money for a fantastic charity.”

The charity funds work at the Lanarkshir­e Beatson centre at University Hospital Monklands in Airdrie.
