Joint effort puts village on the business map

Muirhead hub going from strength to strength

-

Business owners in Muirhead have teamed up to support each other and“put the village on the map”.

Thirty-two firms have formed the Muirhead Local Business Hub (MLBH), which also involves companies from Chryston and Moodiesburn.

The hub was the brainchild of Catherine Kelly, who runs Muirhead Flowers on Cumbernauld Road, after concerns that ongoing property development work would turn customers away.

Catherine said: “They are building around 6500 homes in the area and there were no signs put up to say the shops are all still open while the work is going on, especially for motorists who were just driving by on the new road layout.

“We set up the hub to help support local businesses and put the village on the map again.

“All of the people involved are local and we also included businesses from nearby Moodiesburn, Chryston, Gartcosh and Crowwood.

“We all help each other and get together once a month in the Muirhead Inn to discuss how to improve and develop things.”

Muirhead and Chryston councillor John McLaren is the chairman of the hub, which is home to everything from joiners and hairdressers to dentists and takeaways.

Catherine is thrilled by the organisation’s growth in its first year, telling us: “We’ve got off to a really good start and we are improving our marketing all the time through our online presence.

“The hub is bringing employment into the area and quite a few of the businesses are thriving.

“You name a type of business, we have it within the hub and we’re going a long way towards our ultimate aim of getting people into the village to do their shopping.”

Muirhead fashionista Rosie Martin, a member of the hub and owner of independent boutique Nelly McCabe, added: “I was approached by Catherine to join the hub and delighted to accept the invitation.

“It’s a tough climate out there and very important that local businesses support each other.

“The group meet up once a month and it’s all about putting Muirhead on the map.”

Businesses joining Catherine’s and Rosie’s shops in the hub are: Staffords Nailz, Russell’s Pets, Mount Ellen golf club, Scotio Driveways and Landscapes, Glenbrae Vet Clinic, Stuart Mills Electrical Services, Muirhead Inn, The Midas Touch, Caffe C, RM Tiling, Andy Murtha Joinery Ltd, Hair by Lisa, Staffords Beauty, Oganalp Dry Cleaners, Gold Tanning, WilsonGrant Podiatry, Muirhead Convenience, MD Trauma Ltd, Barry McCafferty Joinery, Hannigan Dental Care, Stewart Auto Salvage, C.A Neil Photography, Micheal Chaus, JMC Telecom, Chryston Cafe, LB Boutique, The Body Trainer, McKerron & Armstrong Builders, Indian Kitchen and Spicey Bite.
