- Ian Bunting

A former Coatbr idge councillor who seamlessly switched from politics to fashion has secured a fivefigure boost for her business.

Frances McGlinchey is one of 15 people from across the country to share £ 215,000 in grant funding from the Scottish Government’s Social Entrepreneurs Fund.

Frances received a £25,000 Build It award to develop Pretty Unique Boutique CIC, the second- hand clothing shop and co- working craft space she runs in Muirhead.

Through the enterprise, Frances organises craft workshops which act as a social hub for those experiencing social isolation; and also offers volunteering opportunities.

The former SNP and independent councillor said: “The funding from Firstport has given us a boost in order to grow and develop.

“We aim to combat isolation and loneliness in our community and encourage craft and creation.

“Recycling is the key to saving the planet and saving the pounds.”

The funding awards were delivered by Firstport, Scotland’s development agency for start- up social enterprise, with two different levels – Start It and Build It –up for grabs.

Josiah Lockhart, chief executive of Firstport, said: “In this latest round of funding, it’s been great to see so many previous Start It award winners, having progressed their enterprises, now coming back with successful Build It applications– including Frances.

“Starting a social enterprise can seem daunting, but the support is there at each stage to help you develop your idea into a viable business delivering lasting social impact.”
