London calling for Academy youngsters

Food-themed visit

- Ian Bunting

Airdrie Academy pupils had a spellbinding time during a four-day trip to London.

Among the famous sites, sounds and landmarks they visited was the Harry Potter Studios, where magic was in the air for the group.

Thirty S2/ 3 students from the secondary school’s home economics department travelled to the English capital for the foodthemed excursion.

Ahead of their time at the film studios facility on the final day, the pupils were treated to a jampacked programme of events.

They got to sample mouthwatering treats at the Borough food and Camden markets, before heading off to the Waitrose Cook School to get some hands- on experience of putting delicious meals together.

The food fun also allowed them to pick up some top tips and tasty recipes to take back into their work in the home economics classroom.

Sight-seeing was the order of the day when the group assembled in Covent Garden and Leicester Square and royalty on their minds during a visit to Buckingham Palace.

A spokesperson for the school told the Advertiser after the trip: “The theme for the visit was food-related and the pupils had their eyes opened by some of the fabulous produce on offer at the markets.

“They had a great time at the Waitrose Cook School and it gave them a chance to hone their home economics skills.

“One of the highlights of the trip was the visit to the Harry Potter Studios; many of the students are big Potter fans and loved seeing some of the props, sets and behind-the-scenes peeks relating to the movies.

“The staff members who accompanied the group were utterly delighted with the behaviour of all of the pupils involved; they were a credit to the school.”
