On right track with initiative
Keeping children safe while seeing them hone their football skills was the aim of a joint initiative by North Lanarkshire Council, the SFA and Railtrack in 2002.
St Columba and Rosehall high schools sent pupils – pictured in the May 8 paper from that year – to the new soccer game workshops, which were part of an innovative campaign to combat the problem of trespass and vandalism on railways.
Tommy McIntyre, SFA development officer with the council, said: “Local children from Kirkwood and Whifflet have been thoroughly enjoying the free weekly football sessions. They are helping to increase safety awareness.
“This campaign has been a huge success so far, and long may it continue.”
