Departing Davidson thanks Rovers

- Football

Recently departed Albion Rovers midfielder Ross Davidson admits he’ll look back on his time at Cliftonhill “fondly”.

The central midfielder has once again linked up with gaffer Darren Young by penning a deal with League One side East Fife.

The 24- year- old was a mainstay in the Rovers side for three-and-a-half years, and made 38 appearances last term as they failed to avoid the trapdoor into League Two.

However, despite his time with Rovers ending in relegation, Davidson says he’d “love to go back” to the club in the future.

He told the Advertiser: “I wanted to move on because I’ve been there for nearly three years now and fancied something new.

“I’m not really young anymore so I need to make sure I’m testing myself at the highest standard available to me.

“I don’t really fancy playing in the bottom league in Scotland yet.

“Darren [Young] was really keen to bring me to East Fife and I loved my time under him with Rovers so it felt right.

“He and Sandy Clark brought me to the club and gave me my chance after being released by Killie so I owe them a lot.”

He continued: “I’ve had some great times at Rovers and I’ll look back on them fondly.

“Winning the league in my first season was special as that was the first time I’d played professionally weekin, week-out.

“Missing out on the playoffs the year after that was disappointing but overall it’s been a good spell at the club.

“The chairman is a great guy and everyone around the place are a great bunch.

“It’s a really well run family club and I would love to go back to Cliftonhill at some point during the rest of my career.

“But right now this is all about having a fresh start and staying in a very competitive league.

“I’m happy to have this opportunity to continue to test myself and I have to thank Rovers for giving me the platform to play.”

Davidson bagged eight goals during his time with Rovers – finding the net twice every season.

His last goal for the club came in a vital basement battle fixture against Queens Park at Cliftonhill which ended 1-1.

Davidson’s goal gave Rovers the lead before a second half equaliser hampered their survival bid.

Davidson admits he can’t put his finger on what sealed Rovers’ fate, but says they were “good enough” to stay up.

He added: “I’m really not sure what went wrong this season. We started pretty well and we were thinking we could aim to hit the play-offs.

“But we suffered a few injuries in key areas at the back and the team ended up becoming a bit disjointed.

“Having said that, I think we were good enough to stay up so I’m not sure exactly what went wrong.

“Not even making the play offs was very disappointing.”
