Derby incentive for Drumpy golf team

-

Drumpellier’s Kenny McLean is looking forward to this week’s league match with local rivals Airdrie.

Drumpy travel to Airdrie Golf Club tomorrow night, knowing a win brings them right back into contention for the league, which runs until July 12.

Airdrie produced a big result last week by beating Hamilton away from home, disrupting the pattern of teams only winning at home.

McLean knows taking on last season’s league runners-up will provide a stern test but is keen to earn the bragging rights.

He told the Advertiser: “It’s a big ask to win at Airdrie but there’s no point going unless you hold some confidence.

“We’re all friends with them but once we’re on the golf course it gets intense because of the will to win.

“We play Airdrie in a pre-season friendly every year so the players know what to expect from each other.

“They’ve got the edge over everyone now after beating Hamilton so it’s a huge match for us.”

He added: “It’s quite a hilly course and tree-lined as well.

“Accuracy is key because it’s not a very long course so shot positioning is vital.

“Airdrie know the ins and outs of their own course and where to hit the ball precisely.

“The pace of the greens is something they’ll be up to speed with too.

“The bottom line is that we won’t be able to catch them unless we win a match away from home.

“Hopefully that will start tomorrow night.”
