Thug given time to complete order

Failed to do allotted work

- Court reporter

A Coatbridge yob who was handed his second football banning order after spouting a sectarian outburst at an opposing supporter on Coatbridge Main Street last year has been given more time to complete his unpaid work.

Connor Peat, 22, launched a tirade of verbal abuse last April shortly after a match between Rangers and Celtic and is now prohibited from entering any pub that’s broadcasting a match involving either team, or attending their games.

The Tantallon Drive resident – who was jailed for two years in 2015 after going on the rampage with a large knife – pleaded guilty at Airdrie Sheriff Court to using the offensive slurs.

Before being sentenced in November last year, the procurator fiscal told the court: “At around 4.20pm officers saw the accused gesturing towards a male who was wearing Celtic colours.

“Mr Peat began shouting and swearing at the male and called him a ‘ Fenian c***’ before threatening to ‘do him in’.

“The pedestrian area was busy and police were encouraged to take action.

“As they approached, he continued the abuse and called the male a ‘scummy Fenian b******’.

“When he noticed police he tried to escape and was chased along the Main Street, then caught and arrested.

“During the journey to the police office he tried to escape and locked out his arms and legs before being successfully restrained.”

In mitigation, Peat’s defence solicitor responded: “This offence is linked to alcohol misuse.

“There is a link between binge drinking and his offending.

“He wasn’t at the match, he was watching in the pub and it’s a hobby he enjoys.”

Sheriff Derek O’Carroll then sentenced Peat to 18 months’ supervision and 180 hours of unpaid work, as well as his football banning order.

But Peat has since struggled to complete his unpaid work and resurfaced in the dock last week to admit a breach of his community payback order.

Sheriff O’Carroll then informed Peat he was revoking the original order and gave him a further four months to complete the work.

However, the sheriff also warned Peat: “If you don’t complete the work then you know exactly what to expect.”
