‘Natural’ striker signs up

-

New Albion Rovers forward John Cunningham says the Cliftonhill club have gained a“natural finisher”.

The former Alloa youngster (left) penned a one-year deal in Coatbridge last week after being released when the Wasps achieved promotion to the Championship.

Cunningham, 20, spent the second half of last season on loan at Clydebank Juniors and notched 12 goals in the final three months of the season.

He told the Advertiser:“Rovers are getting a committed player who works hard for the team.

“I see myself as a natural goalscorer and have done well in that respect at Clydebank and in Alloa’s development team.

“A personal goal of mine is to be top scorer in the team and I want to keep my goal run from last season going.

“I can also link the play as well as finish it off and I’m versatile going forward.”

As well as Clydebank, Cunningham has also spent time on loan at Annan Athletic.

But he believes his spell out of the senior leagues will prepare him for the opportunity to play regular first-team football.

He continued:“Juniors is more physical so playing for Clydebank will prepare me in that regard.

“It’s shown me the type of player I’m likely to come up against every week.

“When the gaffer phoned me I knew this was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down.

“I’ve still got a lot to learn but I feel John [Brogan] can get the best out of me.

“It will be a competitive squad so everyone will have to be 100 per cent.”
