Keep it on current site
Dear Editor,
The announcement by NHS Lanarkshire is that the outcome from their option appraisal process is for a new-build Monklands Hospital.
Although I will always welcome investment into our NHS, the location which scored highest is the old steelworks in Gartcosh, which I’m sure will come as a surprise and disappointment to many of my fellow residents in Airdrie and the surrounding villages, with Glenmavis coming second of the two shortlisted proposals.
I want to restate my belief that the existing site remains the best and most accessible location for any refurbishment or new build.
Given the investment at this location recently it seems nonsensical to consider demolition. But maybe that was the intention all along given the amount of services that have been downgraded and removed in recent years.
Alongside many of my fellow residents in Airdrie and the surrounding villages, I have campaigned continuously to save Monklands Hospital from downgrade and closure.
As a community we were convinced that we were in danger of losing the hospital from its current central location and stood together to defend our hospital.
We must again stand together as a community or face the prospect of a future without a hospital in Airdrie.
NHS Lanarkshire have stated that they will launch an engagement process following the publication of a financial analysis in early July. That process must be fully inclusive and accessible to all, especially to the very community that is in danger of losing its hospital.
I would ask that my fellow elected representatives join me and campaign for this vital service to our communities to stay where it is.
