Men join the Midnight Walk fun for hospice

Anniversary milestone

- Ian Bunting

St Andrew’s Hospice celebrated its 10th annual Midnight Walk in sensational – and unusual – style.

For the first time in the fundraiser’s history, men took part in the 13-mile late night trek through Lanarkshire.

More than 750 participants were involved and they were given a suitably memorable send-off at the starting line when Airdrie Academy’s Andrew Park piped them away from the Ravenscraig sports facility.

The walk then took everyone through Carfin, New Stevenston, Hol y t own, Mossend and Motherwell and the hospice hailed the work of all involved in the 10th anniversary event.

John Brady, head of fundraising, said: “We know that many people go the extra mile to raise money for St Andrew’s Hospice – in this case 13 extra miles.

“I want to say a huge thank you to our sponsors Underground Inspection Services and everyone who took part in the walk to raise much- needed income for the hospice.

“The funds generated from this event are vital in enabling us to provide a high standard of specialist palliative care to the people of North and South Lanarkshire.”

The hospice would also like to thank its staff, volunteers and Police Scotland, Blue Knights, Exact, Lanarkshire cycle groups, Mears, A.G Barr, Tesco, Morrisons and Asda for their support.

And anyone who fancies giving the Midnight Walk a go can sign up for next year’s event now, which will once again be open to women and men.

It will take place on Saturday, June 15, 2019, and registration costs £ 15 until the end of this month and £ 20 thereafter; to register, or for further information, visit www. st- andrews- hospice. com
