Jo takes up position at engineering education centre

An Airdrie scientist is set to inspire science and engineering students through an educational initiative in Ayrshire.

Jo Dempster has been appointed as STEM tutor at the Morphy Richards engineering education centre of Dumfries House, on the Cumnock estate, where she will educate schoolchildren on science, technology, engineering and maths.

Jo, a former Airdrie Academy pupil who worked for the Glasgow Science Centre, said: “Engineering is all about solving scientific problems for future generations so it’s really important that primary and secondary school pupils engage with STEM subjects.

“At the Morphy Richards engineering education centre at Dumfries House, we aim to inspire young people to consider careers in STEM subjects by showing them a snapshot of why science is so important.

“We also have a engineering playground which allows children to test the ideas they are learning about in the workshops.”

The 27- year- old developed her passion for science, nature and the environment through her father and grandfather, who initially “sparked” her interest.

She explained: “My dad was a geologist and my grandpa was an entomologist and they helped spark my interest in science.

“Having always had a keen passion for nature and the environment, I studied zoology at university and realised that sharing information with others was what I loved most, so working in a role like this is perfect for me.”

Jo holds a degree in zoology from the University of St Andrew’s and joins the Dumfries House team at an exciting time.

Earlier this year, The Prince’s Foundation was formed and now has its headquarters on the site.

The Prince of Wales saved the house itself in 2007 and used £20 million from his charitable foundation’s funds to secure its future; and help people engage in learning experiences to promote confidence and personal development.

It also offers training in real-life skills in a bid to open up future employment opportunities.

The Prince’s Foundation is now the second-largest employer in the area, with more than 200 full-time and parttime staff across the house, estate and education and training programmes.
