Airdrie & Coatbridge Advertiser
Star and community give foodbank support
Helping good cause
Film star Hugh Grant has made a second surprise donation of groceries to Airdrie foodbank.
Volunteers were thrilled to receive another consignment of crates full of vital supplies, less than a month after hitting the headlines when the celebrity first lent his support as part of a social media campaign.
They shared a photo of the arrival and tweeted: “We were overwhelmed to receive a further delivery from Hugh Grant as part of his ongoing commitment to the #foodbankchallenge – thank you!
“It’s really gaining momentum – making a real difference, feeding hungry people.”
The actor had previously donated to the local good cause, with foodbank manager David Findlay telling the Advertiser after that first delivery: “We’re absolutely delighted – we were quite surprised that somebody of Hugh Grant’s standing made a donation to us and we’re fortunate we were the beneficiaries.
“He’s quite a supporter of foodbanks. It’s something he has strong feelings about and was trying to raise awareness.”
As well as their celebrity supporter, the foodbank has received welcome donations from community groups – including more than 300 kilograms of items donated by Friends of Airdrie and Coatbridge Islamic Centre.
They have also collected boxes of items from Calderbank Nursery, St Andrew’s and All Saints primaries and Clarkston Church.
David added: “We’re delighted that our donations are on the rise, and particularly delighted that they come from across such a wide spectrum – from Hugh Grant to schools, nurseries, churches, mosques and individuals. It’s very heartwarming.”
Foodbank volunteers also collected £700 in donations at the Airdrie fair and Plains gala, which will be used to buy supplies.
