Kids on target at Coatbridge tournament

- Andrew Bargh

Monklands M hosted more than 1000 fanatical footballing kids at St Ambrose High last weekend.

Teams from all over Sc Scotland came to Coatbridge for the tournament which was orga organised by Uddingston-based Calderbraes Boys Club.

An incredible 91 clubs participated in the event, the fourth in five years.

Monklands teams AC Rovers, Cliftonhill BC, Bargeddie, Young Puma, FC Kirkwood, Gartcairn, Burnbank and Milan all took part.

However it was host club Calderbraes who achieved the most success by taking home two trophies.

Club secretary Stephen McCrory said: “It was a really good weekend.

“We had 1100 players in all and that’s what the festival is all about. Having lots of kids involved in playing football is the main thing and it gives everyone the chance to come together.

“More than 30 volunteers made this weekend possible and without them we’d have been snookered; I’d like to thank them.

“It stayed dry as well which helps the general atmosphere and there was a real festival feel to the place.

“It’s a really good fundraiser for our club and I’d also like to thank our sponsors JFM Electrical and PSL TeamSports of Hillington for supporting a great weekend of football in Coatbridge.”
