NEVER SAY DIAMONDS Findlay hails spirit of his players after their late comeback sees off Forfar

- Andrew Bargh

Airdrie boss Stephen Findlay reckons his side “don’t know when they’re beaten” after an impressive comeback against Forfar on Saturday.

The Diamonds trailed 1-0 heading into the last 10 minutes but goals from Ryan Conroy, Leighton McIntosh and Joao Victoria turned the game around.

Airdrie have already come from behind to draw 1-1 with Premiership side Hamilton Accies in the Betfred Cup, and also ran Livingston close in a 2-1.

Despite not performing to the best of their ability at Station Park, Findlay is delighted with his side’s team spirit.

He told the Advertiser: “Last season, there were plenty of occasions where we played well and came away with nothing. The tables turned in that respect on Saturday.

“We had the better chances in the first half but in the second period we lost momentum.

“I had to change things up and the lads showed tremendous fighting spirit to go on and get the win.

“We’ve not had that with the lack of experience in the squad but now they don’t know when they’re beaten.

“We had a real good go at a fightback against Livi and took a point off Hamilton Accies, now we’ve come here and gone on to win after being behind.

“We know we can play better but every manager wants to get the first three points on the board as quickly as possible, so I’m really pleased with the result.”

The game turned when Conroy stabbed home following a tremendous piece of play from substitute Victoria.

The Portuguese forward turned Loons right-back Ross Meechan with a flick that wouldn’t be out of place on a Brazillian beach, before his cutback was spilled by goalkeeper Marc McCallum.

Victoria, who grabbed the third, also scored the equaliser against Hamilton and Findlay says his unorthodox style could end up causing opposing players all sorts of problems due to his unpredictability.

The Diamonds gaffer continued: “Joao has something about him — it’s that maverick style and his quick feet that make him such a threat.

“He’ll end up breaking somebody’s hip this season with the way he moves.

“The way he sorted his feet out to make space for himself before the equaliser on Saturday was excellent.

“People questioned his signing early doors but over the season they’ll see how effective he is and he’ll be a big player for us.

“I’m delighted for him and he’s been sensational so far this season.”
