Rovers slump continues

Albion Rovers boss Brogan reflects on latest defeat

- Andrew Bargh

Albion Rovers boss John Brogan says he isn’t worried about job security – despite his team’s 10th consecutive defeat on Saturday.

The struggling outfit netted their first league goals of the season against Berwick but were still on the wrong end of a 5-3 scoreline at the Reigart Stadium.

Last week Brogan told the Advertiser the match against their fellow strugglers was a “must-win” encounter.

But despite the club remaining pointless after five games, the manager is positive his side are capable of turning around their wretched form.

He said: “I’m not even thinking about my own job security.

“I’ve been in the game too long to think about focusing on that so I’m not looking down that road.

“The board have got to do what they think is right for the club.

“Look at Brian Kerr last season, he had twice the budget I’m working with and ended up getting the team relegated.

“I knew money was tight coming in here and won’t think about spending money the club doesn’t have.

“We just need to work hard as a coaching team and squad to make this situation better.”

Brogan admits a possible reason for the team’s current inability to pick up a point is a lack of street smarts needed to grind out results at League Two level.

He also revealed he is unsure what his best starting 11 is, with 24 players having featured already this season.

But he hopes four training sessions before the club’s next game will give him the chance to scrutinise and work on weaknesses.

He continued: “We need a victory to build upon soon. The boys let themselves down on Saturday and they need to be more clever. There were lapses in concentration and a streetwise aspect missing from our defending.

“We need to find the solution to that and we’ve now got two weeks to keep working away.

“We’re trying to figure out what our best starting 11 is and will continue to tweak it until we get there.

“At the end of the day it’s my job to improve the players.

“We looked like we could score with every attack against Berwick which is encouraging.

“From middle to back, though, we need to sharpen up and be harder to beat. We’re still at an early stage and I’m confident we‘ll turn this around.”
