TV judge’s masterclass

Coatbridge cancer survivor Sheila McNicol was left in a spin after a surprise meeting with Strictly Come Dancing judge Shirley Ballas.

The dancing superstar made a shock appearance to announce that charity Breast Cancer Care’s support app, BECCA, had waltzed off with a National Lottery award after being voted the UK’s favourite health project.

Sheila, who volunteers with the charity, was then treated to a ballroom masterclass as Shirley, who recently had a breast cancer scare and is an advocate for early detection, put on her dancing shoes.

Former teacher Sheila, 60, said: “It was brilliant meeting Shirley; she was so down to earth and a lovely, friendly lady.

“She taught us some of her dance moves, which was great fun, and we all had a lovely day.”

And Sheila will join Shirley as a television star as she was involved in the making of a short film celebrating Breast Cancer Care’s awards success – which saw them scoop £5000 and a National Lottery awards trophy – that will be broadcast during a BBC One special on September 26.

Sheila said: “I can’t believe that I was involved in making the short film for the National Lottery award ceremony.

“The BECCA support app helps people move forward after breast cancer and face issues like body confidence, anxiety and the longterm side effects of treatment.

“It was wonderful to find out the charity has been recognised by such a prestigious awards ceremony.”

Shirley added: “It is incredible to hear the stories of how this development has helped women cope with life after breast cancer.

“It’s a daunting transition and BECCA is doing the much-needed job of shining a light on how to get to the other side.”
