Triple boost for Airdrie foodbank
Islamic Centre hand over £1000
Airdrie foodbank has received three welcome summer boosts as volunteers continue to appeal for donations to support its work.
The local charity received £1000 from Friends of Airdrie and Coatbridge Islamic Centre (FACIC) who raised funds for the charity at their recent open day.
FACIC chairperson Irfan Jehangir handed over the bumper cheque to foodbank representatives Fiona Curtis and Robert Jack at the special event.
There was also a further £500 donation from SC Design in Coatbridge – thanks to its generous managing director and an enterprising and bighearted client.
After the company fitted a new kitchen for customer Tracy Kiernan, managing director Simon Chilton enquired if there was anything else the company could do to help or complete the job – and received the reply “yes, give a donation to Airdrie foodbank”.
He took up the charity challenge and was joined by Tracy as he handed over a welcome £500 cheque to the local organisation.
Meanwhile, generous shoppers and staff at Tesco in Coatbridge gathered more than 540 kilograms of supplies at a recent collection drive in the store at Faraday retail park.
Foodbank manager David Findlay said: “We’re overwhelmed by the generosity of local companies and organisations – and the continuing support of the community both locally and further afield is invaluable.
“I’d also like to praise the dedication and hard work of all of our volunteers and Citizens’ Advice Bureau staff, and to thank Calderbank, St Edward’s and Airdrie Baptist churches for their superb support in allowing us to use their premises, and all the businesses who have taken a collection basket or can.
“Although our position is much improved, we still require basics such as milk, rice pudding, juice, tinned fish and fruit.”
