Shine taken off wonder goal

-

Graham Gracie scored a wonder first goal of his senior career – but admits another defeat took the shine off his big moment.

The summer signing from West Region Junior side Larkhall Thistle hit the target from around 40 yards on Saturday to put Rovers 3-2 up on Berwick at Cliftonhill.

However, disaster was just around the corner as Borderers supersub Cedwyn Scott scored two and made another to earn the visitors victory.

And a 10th straight league-and-cup defeat of the season left Gracie gutted despite his goal.

“I didn’t expect the ball to come to me and as I’ve turned I’ve noticed the keeper further off his line than I thought he would be,” the 26-year-old said of his effort.

“The goal is a very small positive. To score three goals and be ahead twice in the game is very disappointing. The result was the main thing.”

Alan Murdoch gave Rovers the lead but ex-Rovers aces Gary Phillips and Paul Willis, from the penalty spot, made it 2-1.

Lewis McLear levelled before the interval with Gracie netting Rovers’ third but they were sunk by Scott’s brace either side of Daryl Healy’s goal.

Gracie added: “There were a lot of disappointed voices in there. We have made some small strides since the start of the season and we were on the front foot for most of this game.”
