Rovers on the slump

-

No wins in 11 games so far this season doesn’t make for pretty reading for Albion Rovers.

One win in 22 games makes for uglier reading.

If you broaden the spectrum, supporters will be shielding their eyes upon reading that Rovers have won just twice in 32 matches this calendar year.

That makes for abhorrent reading – and Ronnie Boyd knows it.

The chairman announced in January he was to step down from his role in June, but he has carried on in an interim basis until his replacement is confirmed next month.

In that time, Rovers’decline has been dramatic, with the club’s relegation from League One followed by a huge turnover in players and a winless start to life in the bottom tier of the SPFL.

The club gained their first point of the season against Cowdenbeath on Saturday, but remain four points adrift at the bottom.

Rovers play Stirling Albion at home this weekend before travelling to Annan and the international fixtures. Boyd says the board will reassess the club’s managerial situation at that point.

He told the Advertiser:“As a board we’ve spoken to John about the results and he’s aware of the importance of them. We’re in a very difficult place at the moment; granted we’ve only played seven games but we’re in a very difficult place.

“If we’re still in this situation by the time the next international break comes around then we’ll have to look at this situation very seriously.

“I feel this as much as any fan and have been thinking about it non-stop.

“We were hoping to consolidate in League Two and have a go at reaching the play-offs but it isn’t working out like that. The natural time for taking stock is at the end of the first quarter and we’re now two games away from that.”

Boyd, who has attended Rovers games since he was a child, believes it is important for fellow fans’opinions to be heard when it comes to any decision made by the board.

He added:“The fans’feelings have to weigh on any decision the board make.

“They’re our customers and have a right to an opinion that we have to take into consideration.

“We on the board might have a broader view and know things they don’t, but these are not people largely on the fringes of the club.

“They travel home and away, buy season tickets and merchandise and we’d be foolish not to take their views into account.”
