Plans to improve junction

CarlisleRoadmove

- Judith Tonner

Proposals have been submitted to improve a congested and difficult junction on a busy Airdrie road.

The plan would see Craigneuk Avenue’s junction with Carlisle Road being moved by rebuilding the path of the road on part of the current parkland space.

It would mean the road would then be aligned into a light-controlled crossroads with South Biggar Road, on the other side of the A73.

Plans have now been formally submitted and will go before a future meeting of the authority’s planning committee.

A spokesperson for North Lanarkshire Council told the Advertiser: “Our road service submitted an application with proposals to improve traffic flow at Carlisle Road, Craigneuk Avenue and South Biggar Road, by changing the layout and installing fourway traffic lights.

“The northern side of Craigneuk Road and the adjacent footpath would be removed, and a new section of carriageway created to improve the layout.”

Officials added: “Traffic flow will be controlled by lights to alleviate delays caused when vehicles are turning onto Carlisle Road.

“The old section of road would be removed and the site landscaped.

“Details of the application and how to comment have been sent to neighbouring properties and statutory consultees.”

The junctions were due to have been improved when Asda were granted permission in April 2013 for a store at the Craigneuk site, but the supermarket then announced 18 months later that the development would not go ahead.
